Writing Collaborative books in the format of
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Each group will create a
separate book. The purpose of the book will be to explain the Six+1 Traits of
Writing. Here is the format:
On Sunday, . . . (collaborate on beginning)
On Monday, . . . ( ideas)
On Tuesday, . . . (organization)
On Wednesday, . . . (voice)
On Thursday, . . . word choice)
On
Friday, . . .(fluency)
On
Saturday, . . .(conventions)
On Sunday, . . . (presentation and conclusion)
Your group may choose the title
of your book, and you will need to work together on the beginning and ending of
the story as well as on the cover. Each person will be responsible for at least
one day of the week (one day per page) depending on the size of your group. You
group may choose to write from the standpoint of instructing about the Six Traits
(The
Very Industrious Writer) or assessing someone’s previously written
paper (The Very Finicky Teacher). If
you have another idea, try it; just make sure that you review the key points of
the Six Traits for the class. Invent
your own titles (The Very Alien Martian, The Very Ravenous Bookworm) and story line. Everyone is
responsible for the +1, presentation.
As a group, agree on font
size and style and print out your book to present to the class. You won’t have
time to go into extensive detail here. The key to success is to decide on voice and be consistent throughout. For
example, the voice could be that of a stuffy old author, a valley girl, a WWF
Wrestler, a cowboy, etc.
