All of these poems must be typed; each on a separate piece of paper.

Part II: Poetry Analysis (65 points, 2 points each)

  1. You will need to locate the following poetic devices in other people’s poetry.  These can be any published poems as longs as we did not cover them in class.  You can use as many poems as you need to identify these elements.  Each element must be clearly labeled, and a brief explanation should be included when necessary to make your assessment clear.  These poems must be typed or be a copy of the original; include author’s name and source.

·         rhyme

·         alliteration

·         imagery

·         metaphor

·         speaker

·         symbolism

·         internal rhyme

·         form

·         sound

·         rhyme scheme

·         assonance

·         simile

·         personification

·         theme

·         repetition

·         onomatopoeia

 2.  You will also need to select the lyrics of a favorite song and conduct a poetic analysis of the words.  Treat it as a poem and identify as many poetic elements as you can.  Label clearly; lyrics must be school appropriate.

Part III: Cover Letter (40 points)

This part of the project is key.  It is where I will get a clear understanding about what you learned from this assignment.

·         The first paragraph of your letter needs to explain which of your original poems is you best work and why you believe this to be true.  You could address the following questions or add some of you own:  What did you learn?  What changes or revisions did you make to improve the poem?  What is your favorite part of this poem?  What challenges did this poem present?  I need to see in depth thinking.

·         The second paragraph needs to cover what you learned from the poetry research/analysis section.  Again, I need to see in depth thinking.
