Transitions
Transitions are
words, sentences, or paragraphs that connect other words, sentences or
paragraphs. Effective transitions will allow the reading to flow and show the
relationship between ideas.
1.
Each
sentence in a paragraph should be related to the preceding and following
sentences. Writers should also relate ideas and
paragraphs.
2.
Transitions should not always come at the
beginning of the sentence in every new paragraph; they can be buried within the
sentence for variety.
Example: “John, however, chose to do the
right thing.”
3.
Transitions do not always need to be
explicit.
Transitions do not
come at the end of the paragraph or story but rather at the beginning of the new
paragraph or story.
