VocabularyAn intense, focused study of vocabulary takes place during the first quarter of school. During this time students will work with 100 words and practice the application of their meanings using context clues analogies, and multiple meanings. Particular emphasis will be placed on understanding analogies because this form of study requires students to use higher level thinking skills. Each week students will receive twenty new words. Worksheets worth 50 points will be due every block day. A short quiz will be given to test for meaning. Periodically, more rigorous quizzes will be given over 30-40 words. These quizzes will require students to identify words by synonyms, antonyms, sentence completion, and usage in original sentences. Significantly more preparation must be done to be successful on these quizzes. It's important that students complete this type of testing because standardized tests use this method. Without practice, students will score poorly. The English department has identified vocabulary as an area where scores are consistently lower than other identifiable skills, so we have made improving these scores a priority. This unit is designed to help bridge this gap. A final test over all 100 words will complete the unit. Once this unit is complete, vocabulary is studied in context with the literature units. Various strategies will be utilized, but the intensity of the work will be significantly less. Vocabulary Project requirements Correct definitions English I
