Course Overview: |
What are templates?Templates are pre-designed layouts that we use for the yearbook. Students in the class will learn graphic design concepts and apply these to the design of the yearbook pages. Often within each section of the yearbook, the pages will have the same or nearly the same design to help the user identify the location within the book. Templates are work up front, but they really help speed along the layout process once production gets underway. Templates also assure consistency and make the editing process simpler. In addition to student designs, Jostens also supplies templates from which we can draw ideas and/or incorporate into the yearbook. What is Yeartech PicturePlacer?Yeartech is the software provided by Jostens that is installed to run with PageMaker. This part of the program helps students meet the specifications required for professional publishing. One of the really awesome features of this program is called PicturePlacer. This program will automatically fit the digital image into the picture box, maintain the color of the photo or change it to grayscale for black and white pages, allow for cropping and moving the picture within the photo box, and save the links needed for publishing--advanced technology to make our job easier! How is the yearbook published? All of the pre-publishing work for the yearbook is done in the classroom by the students. Once stories are written, photos are taken, and layout is finished, the pages are run through a procedure that Yeartech supports to gather all the files and check for potential printing issues. Paying attention to publishing guidelines during this stage will drastically reduce headaches later. Pages are sent to the plant, proofs are printed and returned, final corrections are made and the pages are returned to the Jostens plant for them to begin the printing process. |
