Novel

We culminate our studies with Charles Dickens' classic novel Great Expectations. Charles Dickens is considered by most to be one of the greatest British novelists. His work is read the world over and studied in formal education classes everywhere. In this unit we take a close look at the novel considered by most to be his best work. The lessons and themes presented through the character of Pip are relevant today and are extremely applicable to today's high school student.

Through this book students will also be introduced to life in England during the 1800s. Dickens used his characters to expose the need for social reform, condemning child labor, the justice system, and debtor's prison. His values are closely examined in this text.
